...and so, the end is nigh....... Joy and tears to come for us all.

We have some AMAZING news for all our followers of Clarkus Barkus aka Clark Kent, Superman, fabulous foster dog, handsome fella and all together perfect pup!

Clarkus Barkus is being adopted!!!

Terrier SOS received an adoption request from two wonderful ladies, Lisa & Gill, who live in Fowey, only an hour away from us. They have experience of 'rescue' and had previously rescued a little schnauzer who sadly passed away this year after many many years of love and comfort with them. They found themselves missing having a dog in their home and lives so started their search for another dog in need of love and support......they came across Clark's story via the Terrier SOS Twitter page and the rest, as is said, is history!

We have done all the necessary home checks etc and as expected Gill & Lisa passed with flying colours.... I kept trying to find a reason not to give him up(!) but there is not one thing about this match that is not perfect. Everything they want and need in a dog Clark supplies and more importantly everything Clark needs in a home they can supply.  He will be loved and supported medically and emotionally by them both and I am sure will live to be a very well loved, happy old doggie in their care.

Now, for a few more honest thoughts........ I am going to be heart broken when he leaves as this fostering is hard work on your emotions and heart. Clark arrived in the rain, sad, smelly, desperate for love and understanding and from that moment I loved him. He has been through a whole kaleidoscope of problems from abuse, abandonment, hunger and pain in Spain through to love, comfort  and care since arriving in Cornwall. There has been a few times since 20th May when I could see no future for him as his medical needs were so great, but his determination to get better, that terrierist spirit, got us all through those first weeks and months as our wonderful vets assessed him and came up with a plan to repair him. Some days he was so sad it was dreadful to see, he evidently was deeply distressed that he leaked when he slept..... he would wake up and start to 'bury' his bed to hide the wee. Whether he had been told off or abused because of his leaking I don't know but he hates to have a wet bed and it really did worry him.

One of the hardest days since his arrival was when we received the results of his scans and x-rays...disbelief that he could have been hurt so badly but show so little outward signs of the smashed pelvis, and disbelief that someone could have inflicted this on to such a sweet natured loving dog, completely beyond my comprehension.

We would not be where we are today without our wonderful vets, Rosemullion, but particularly without Siobhan's gentle care for him - we could not have achieved this amazing result without her. Nor without the love and care from all the other vets, nurses and all the staff who have been kind to both Clark and me .... putting up with barking all day when he was settling in, to having the kitchen requisitioned as a temporary kennel for him when they needed peace and quiet in the prep room and theater.

So for the 166 days, he will have been with us when he leaves, he has had nothing but the best love and care vital in bringing about this radical transformation and he leaves us in the best possible health, both physically and mentally. We are safe in the knowledge that his care will continue and he will continue to grow in confidence, improve in health and maintain his love for life with Gill & Lisa.

Day 1 - 20th May 2014

I will continue to bring you updates until November when he leaves us and I hope that Lisa & Gill they will allow me to bring you all up to date with his progress with them occasionally. His loyal followers will no doubt be desperate for news on his new and happy life in Fowey!

To bring you up to date with his goings on here in Carnkie, yesterday Clark had a bath and furcut so he would be able to see better! His face had grown quite bushy so I thought he could do with a trim......his eye sight isn't marvelous due to the Keratitis so giving him a closer cut around his eyes seemed a sensible measure.

Where's my eyes?
He is such a good boy to bath and to clip too, he stands nicely without a collar on and doesn't move until I am all finished, clipping, snipping and brushing his curls.

I can see again!!!
If I keep very still and pretend I'm not here she might forget to trim my claws!

We have been restricted on our walks recently as there are now cows and sheep in the fields we usually use. I am confident that given the opportunity Clark would chase both!  He really dislikes horse up close too, he jumped up on to a hedge to tell one off that was looking over at us... my Molly loves them and often hops up to lick their nose or just have a sniff whilst they blow, Wena usually ignores them but certainly wouldn't tell them off.  Had Clark not been on a lead I am sure he would have tried to bite the pony and probably chased it too :(  I guess he hasn't grown up with livestock around him and doesn't know that they wouldn't hurt him. I don't trust my girls with sheep but to be fair they haven't chased any livestock and that's more down to us putting them on a lead if there are sheep around more than them being disinclined to chase!!  Molly always used to go and see the cows and horses when off lead, have a little sniff and return and even trotted off after a ewe and her lambs when we came across them in a ploughed field unexpectedly one day....she turned tail and raced back to me when the Ewe bleated at her and turned to face Moll....thankfully!  Clark most definitely is not a farmland lover! He will be perfectly suited to life in a small town with semi-urban walks.

We also had the pleasure of Rupert, the whippet, coming to play last weekend too. Clark was great with him and didn't have an issue with Roop coming in and even allowed Roop to sleep on his bed in the Dining Room whilst we had tea with Anna! We took them all to the reservoir at Stithians for a walk and the girls and Rupert played chase for ages whilst Clark ambled about sniffing. Then towards the end of our walk we had put the girls on their leads and Roop tried to get Clark to play chase with him, Clark took the hint and raced off after the whippet for about 25 yards, then he remembered he can't do racing about and came to a halt while Rupert came back for another go - dear Clark would love to play chase but his damaged back, hips and pelvis just don't allow him to. He returned to ambling and sniffing, oh and peeing on every leaf!

I am sure you will all be thrilled to hear that Clark is reserved and shall soon to be going to his forever home and I can assure you all that he most certainly landed on his paws when we received Lisa & Gills application for him. We shall keep you all abreast of the lead up to 'D' day and I will be in need of boxes of tissues for the day he leaves!

Broken teethies, dentals and a snazzy jumpie!

This week Clarkus Barkus has had a dental with his favorite vet, Siobhan, and his favorite nurse, Maria, doing the honours. His gums have been bleeding when he has been chewing so after a good look at them Siobhan recommended a Scale and Polish and some Antibiotics to settle them down a little after.

He was a good boy as always and after Siobhan had done a full assessment the lovely Maria got to work cleaning and polishing them from front to back. He was a little groggy from the Anaesthetic and it upset his tummy a little.......... poo, lots of poo! :(  He is a sensitive chap and his tummy suffered when he had the anaesthetic for his xrays in June so I was expecting a few clean beds being required in his kennel at work.  All in all he did very well and as always he has had the best treatment by the best people.

Sadly along with the other damage he suffered at the hands of the Spanish he has a broken end to his left Canine. It doesn't cause him any problems so there is no need to intervene in any way but he can catch you with it when he is playing and it is still quite sharp. It will round off in time.

He is such a good boy to take his Antibiotics, he is on Clindacyl which are quite large for a small dog to take but he happily allows me to pop one on the back of his tongue. He should rattle the amount of medicines he takes bless him but he is good with all of them.

I have started using Dentisept, a paste that sticks to the gums and provides protection against plaque and bacteria in the mouth which I hope will maintain his dazzlingly white teeth for the future. Again he is such a good boy to have it applied, no fuss just a little shake to the head as with the Propalin.

Today I have made Clarky a new jumpie what with winter coming along. He had to have one to match his foster sissies......

Clark has come a very long way since he was rescued by Terrier SOS in December 2013 and arrived here in May 2014 - he is now a proper terrierist, happy, with a sense of humour, a cheeky nature, a gentle loving soul who loves nothing more than sitting on your knee having cuddles or curling up in a warm bed dozing.  He is a special boy.

I have also come a long way since May when he arrived and all my fears of fostering Clark are a distant memory. One of my biggest concerns was him integrating into our home and life but the reality has shown that is the easy bit.  The tough bit will be letting him go, letting go of his paw and saying goodbye. That's the hard bit but despite the inevitable tears it will be a happy day when he is in the arms of his new family.

Superman ....and fox poo!!!!

We have had a quiet but lovely week of walks in the sunshine and cuddles.

Clark received a wonderful Superman Bandana from a lovely supporter of Terrier SOS, he looks very handsome in it BUT today he rolled in fox poo whilst sporting it so it is now in the wash!   Naughty Terrierist........ just a wonderful naughty terrierist!

He has been helping me make 'jumpies' for the Terrier SOS auction that took place last weekend. We donated four so we are two down and two to go. I enjoy making them and Clark likes to warm the material for me! They are sent with love and Clark hair!

We were all so sad to hear about the Manchester Dog Home tragedy. It doesn't bear thinking about those poor souls but it also shows how much people love dogs and would put themselves at risk to save them. There are good people in this world. If you can donate a £1 please do......... https://www.justgiving.com/manchesterdogshomemen

On a happier note Molly is usually the one here that sleeps in strange positions but yesterday Clark decided to sleep on his back up against my chair........ strange choice but evidently comfortable as he stayed there for quite a long time!

Today we were walking in the fields and Clark was lagging behind, sniffing and wandering around enjoying himself. We walked on to the next field and I called a few times letting him know where we were......... he took his time but eventually he made his way across to me, there was a few minutes where I hoped he wasn't legging it in the other direction but I kept cool and let him work out that he needed to follow us and he did! He is definitely getting more and more reliable and his recall is improving all the time. Giving them time and space to work things out is nerve wracking but worth it! I should add he had his long line on so had he been legging it in the other direction I would have caught him up at the hedge!

Clark has made his way into our hearts and it will be so very hard to see him leave us. He is going to make a very very lucky person(s) life so happy when he joins his forever home but he will take a little bit of our hearts with him when he goes. We love Clarkus Barkus!!

Assisted Agility, Rosettes and more cuddles.......

Clark has had a great week! We have been out for lots of lovely walks and on Sunday we attended our agility club's annual Fun Day, raising lots of money for local animal rescues.

Clark entered a few classes and won Best Rescue, receiving a shiny red ribbon and a huge round of applause from the spectators! The judge evidently knew her terriers ;) and felt that Clark and his story of how he came to be in Cornwall was worthy of a 1st prize out of about 20 other dogs.

He was wonderful with all the crowds and lots and lots of dogs to sniff and wag his stump at. He also met some children whom he was very calm around. Their parents were fantastic and gave them good instruction on how to approach him and not to get 'in his face'. They were a pleasure to talk to and kept coming back to say hello to Clark throughout the day.

Clark proudly wore is 'Adopt Me' coat and we had so many people asking about his story and many many asked to have a cuddle. Clark took it all in his stride and was more than happy to have a few pats and chats.

We also had a go at agility with him....... well, more of a highly assisted, slow, walk around the course but we achieved a clear round - a 'without time restricted' and very generous clear round ;) but a clear round all the same. There were 8 small jumps that we walked over, a hoop, a tunnel and 6 weaves. He was very keen as after every one he had a treat.......its surprising what a little bit of sausage can do!

And we're off...

Jump 2 successfully taken....

Not sure about this purple hoop,,,,,more sausage required!

And we're through...

Over we go......slowly

Hmmmm, might need some help with this one....
Not very elegant but Clark needed some reassurance

Here he is, sausage as a reward for being so brave

OK then just a little bit more

Almost there...

Now the weaves......follow your nose Clarky

Gently does it....

Last pole to go....

And across the finish line...... woooohooooo

A very proud moment! A Clear Round Rosette!
He is growing more confident and happier by the day and after being with us for 18 weeks today he is a different dog. He is a very special boy and his continuing treatment is giving him the very best opportunity to become as well as he can be.

Posing with their winnings!
