We have some AMAZING news for all our followers of Clarkus Barkus aka Clark Kent, Superman, fabulous foster dog, handsome fella and all together perfect pup!
Clarkus Barkus is being adopted!!!
Terrier SOS received an adoption request from two wonderful ladies, Lisa & Gill, who live in Fowey, only an hour away from us. They have experience of 'rescue' and had previously rescued a little schnauzer who sadly passed away this year after many many years of love and comfort with them. They found themselves missing having a dog in their home and lives so started their search for another dog in need of love and support......they came across Clark's story via the Terrier SOS Twitter page and the rest, as is said, is history!
We have done all the necessary home checks etc and as expected Gill & Lisa passed with flying colours.... I kept trying to find a reason not to give him up(!) but there is not one thing about this match that is not perfect. Everything they want and need in a dog Clark supplies and more importantly everything Clark needs in a home they can supply. He will be loved and supported medically and emotionally by them both and I am sure will live to be a very well loved, happy old doggie in their care.
Now, for a few more honest thoughts........ I am going to be heart broken when he leaves as this fostering is hard work on your emotions and heart. Clark arrived in the rain, sad, smelly, desperate for love and understanding and from that moment I loved him. He has been through a whole kaleidoscope of problems from abuse, abandonment, hunger and pain in Spain through to love, comfort and care since arriving in Cornwall. There has been a few times since 20th May when I could see no future for him as his medical needs were so great, but his determination to get better, that terrierist spirit, got us all through those first weeks and months as our wonderful vets assessed him and came up with a plan to repair him. Some days he was so sad it was dreadful to see, he evidently was deeply distressed that he leaked when he slept..... he would wake up and start to 'bury' his bed to hide the wee. Whether he had been told off or abused because of his leaking I don't know but he hates to have a wet bed and it really did worry him.
One of the hardest days since his arrival was when we received the results of his scans and x-rays...disbelief that he could have been hurt so badly but show so little outward signs of the smashed pelvis, and disbelief that someone could have inflicted this on to such a sweet natured loving dog, completely beyond my comprehension.
We would not be where we are today without our wonderful vets, Rosemullion, but particularly without Siobhan's gentle care for him - we could not have achieved this amazing result without her. Nor without the love and care from all the other vets, nurses and all the staff who have been kind to both Clark and me .... putting up with barking all day when he was settling in, to having the kitchen requisitioned as a temporary kennel for him when they needed peace and quiet in the prep room and theater.
So for the 166 days, he will have been with us when he leaves, he has had nothing but the best love and care vital in bringing about this radical transformation and he leaves us in the best possible health, both physically and mentally. We are safe in the knowledge that his care will continue and he will continue to grow in confidence, improve in health and maintain his love for life with Gill & Lisa.
Day 1 - 20th May 2014 |
I will continue to bring you updates until November when he leaves us and I hope that Lisa & Gill they will allow me to bring you all up to date with his progress with them occasionally. His loyal followers will no doubt be desperate for news on his new and happy life in Fowey!
To bring you up to date with his goings on here in Carnkie, yesterday Clark had a bath and furcut so he would be able to see better! His face had grown quite bushy so I thought he could do with a trim......his eye sight isn't marvelous due to the Keratitis so giving him a closer cut around his eyes seemed a sensible measure.
He is such a good boy to bath and to clip too, he stands nicely without a collar on and doesn't move until I am all finished, clipping, snipping and brushing his curls.
I can see again!!! |
If I keep very still and pretend I'm not here she might forget to trim my claws! |
We have been restricted on our walks recently as there are now cows and sheep in the fields we usually use. I am confident that given the opportunity Clark would chase both! He really dislikes horse up close too, he jumped up on to a hedge to tell one off that was looking over at us... my Molly loves them and often hops up to lick their nose or just have a sniff whilst they blow, Wena usually ignores them but certainly wouldn't tell them off. Had Clark not been on a lead I am sure he would have tried to bite the pony and probably chased it too :( I guess he hasn't grown up with livestock around him and doesn't know that they wouldn't hurt him. I don't trust my girls with sheep but to be fair they haven't chased any livestock and that's more down to us putting them on a lead if there are sheep around more than them being disinclined to chase!! Molly always used to go and see the cows and horses when off lead, have a little sniff and return and even trotted off after a ewe and her lambs when we came across them in a ploughed field unexpectedly one day....she turned tail and raced back to me when the Ewe bleated at her and turned to face Moll....thankfully! Clark most definitely is not a farmland lover! He will be perfectly suited to life in a small town with semi-urban walks.
We also had the pleasure of Rupert, the whippet, coming to play last weekend too. Clark was great with him and didn't have an issue with Roop coming in and even allowed Roop to sleep on his bed in the Dining Room whilst we had tea with Anna! We took them all to the reservoir at Stithians for a walk and the girls and Rupert played chase for ages whilst Clark ambled about sniffing. Then towards the end of our walk we had put the girls on their leads and Roop tried to get Clark to play chase with him, Clark took the hint and raced off after the whippet for about 25 yards, then he remembered he can't do racing about and came to a halt while Rupert came back for another go - dear Clark would love to play chase but his damaged back, hips and pelvis just don't allow him to. He returned to ambling and sniffing, oh and peeing on every leaf!
I am sure you will all be thrilled to hear that Clark is reserved and shall soon to be going to his forever home and I can assure you all that he most certainly landed on his paws when we received Lisa & Gills application for him. We shall keep you all abreast of the lead up to 'D' day and I will be in need of boxes of tissues for the day he leaves!
